It is no secret at this point that the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Maryland Terrapins — two neighboring Big Ten schools — do not like one another very much. That said, things could get heated between Penn State recruiting and the Terps as both are locked onto the same 2024 four-star quarterback: Michael Van Buren.

Penn State recruiting has had pretty good luck as of late — last week alone, the Nittany Lions hauled in two massive four-star recruits, bringing the class onto On3’s top-20 (No. 19).

Michael Van Buren is a 5-11.5, 185 pound quarterback in the 2024 class. He ranks as the No. 160 player in the nation, the No. 12 quarterback in his class, and the No. 4 player in Maryland. Van Buren is a product of St. Frances Academy in Bowie, MD, less than 195 miles from State College.

Maryland leads, though Penn State is close behind

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Michael Van Buren’s top-choice school is Maryland — the Terps have a 30% chance of landing Van Buren’s commitment. Coming in second is Penn State recruiting, who is listed as having a 21.1% chance at landing the four-star quarterback. The three schools that round out his top five are Rutgers (9.3%), Oregon (7.7%), and Alabama (4.0%). Still, the only two major players appear to be Penn State and Maryland.

As we head into the thick of recruiting season this spring and summer, the race for Michael Van Buren will be one for Penn State football fans to keep a close eye on.
