One of the leading receiving targets for Penn State football in 2023 is coming back to Happy Valley next year. Friday, Nittany Lions TE Tyler Warren announced his intentions to put off the NFL Draft for another season. Warren put together an outstanding season for Penn State this fall, with one more showcase in the Peach Bowl coming next week. The decision, in light of fellow TE Theo Johnson’s Draft declaration, will fill a massive hole in the Nittany Lions’ pass offense for 2024.
Tyler Warren will return to Penn State in 2024
Penn State TE Tyler Warren had an ambiguous response when asked about his impending NFL Draft decision last month. Now the Nittany Lions pass catcher has made his decision public. In a post on social media Friday, Warren officially announced his plans to return to Penn State for the 2024 season. Warren makes his announcement a week before the Nittany Lions face Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl on December 30.
“Having the opportunity to compete against the best, be trained by the best, and receive a world-class education is something I’m grateful for every day,” Warren wrote on social media. “As I reflect on the past 4 years, I’m thankful for the memories and lessons learned alongside my teammates and coaches. I’m excited to have the opportunity to play in the Peach Bowl in just a few short days with a team I love and respect. We’ve done some great things as a family, but I do believe the best is yet to come. After much thought and consideration, I’ve decided to return to Penn State for the 2024 season. We Are!”
Relative to expectations, perhaps no other Penn State football player has played himself into a better prospective NFL Draft position than Tyler Warren. The TE has 29 receptions for 295 yards this season, good enough for third-team All-Big Ten honors as voted by the coaches. His seven receiving touchdowns this year lead all Penn State players, is fourth-most in the Big Ten, and third among FBS TEs.
Although he’s never been Penn State’s No. 1 TE, Warren has had an extremely impressive career. Warren currently sits third all-time among Nittany Lion TEs with 11 career touchdown receptions. That number also puts Warren 17th in Penn State football history for receiving touchdowns. He has been an efficient target for Penn State, with 25% of his career receptions going for scores.
Massive hole filled with Warren returning to the Penn State football passing offense
Tyler Warren’s announcement comes in light of a decision from Theo Johnson, who declared for the 2024 NFL Draft on December 8.
In light of challenges at the WR position, the TE room stepped up massively for Penn State football in 2023. Together, Warren and Johnson combined for 13 receiving touchdowns, almost half of the Nittany Lions’ total scores through the air.
Now with Warren returning to Penn State, a significant void has been filled heading into 2024. The Nittany Lions also have a plethora of young talent already in the TE room. Luke Reynolds, one of the top recruits in the entire country for 2024, will arrive in a few weeks.
Penn State football is also searching for productive WRs in the transfer portal to bring to Happy Valley for 2024.
If one thing is for certain, it’s that Warren will have a massive role in the Nittany Lion passing attack in 2024.
