In 2022, Penn State football underwent a remarkable transformation, improving from a 7-6 record the previous year to an impressive 11-2 season that culminated in a triumphant Rose Bowl victory. Head coach James Franklin once again led the team to a top-10 finish, further enhancing the program’s reputation — in the newest 2023-24 national title odds, the Nittany Lions have also moved up.
Now, with the talented five-star recruit Drew Allar as their quarterback, a stacked roster, and a formidable coaching staff, the Nittany Lions have set their sights on capturing the Big Ten title and securing a spot in the College Football Playoff. The recently updated 2023-24 national title odds indicate an increased likelihood of success for the Lions following their spring ball preparations.
Penn State football 2023-24 national title odds change following spring ball
In the initial way-too-early national title odds, Penn State football came in 10th behind a plethora of programs, including Texas, which was a head-scratcher. Obviously after making the CFP in 2022, Michigan and Ohio State are still among the top title contenders in this year’s national title odds — this will likely not change heading into the 2023 season.
For Penn State football, the newest odds brought good news — the Nittany Lions moved from No. 10 in the too-early odds to No. 8 (tie) in the updated post-spring national title odds. While these are just betting lines and not a true indication of success for the coming year, it is apparent that Penn State football is being seen as one of the most competitive rosters in the nation.
The Lions have proven that they can win at a high level since the sanctions ended in 2016, with four 11-win seasons, three top 10 finishes, three New Year’s Six wins, and a Big Ten title in the past six full seasons. If Penn State football can manage to split their games against Michigan and Ohio State, as well as win out against the field, the Nittany Lions should have a solid shot at making the CFP with an 11-1 record (or 12-1 if Penn State makes it to the Big Ten title game).
Once in the playoff, it’s just two wins to a national title — something that Penn State football has not done since the 1986 season under former head coach Joe Paterno.
