State College — Penn State dropped its first game since February Thursday with a 4-3 loss versus Cornell. In response, the Nittany Lions turned out a dominant effort Sunday, shutting out Canisius 7-0 in the Penn State Softball Invitational.

This game was all Penn State from the very start.

The Nittany Lions started scoring right away when Kaitlyn Morrison hit a two-run blast in the first inning to go up 2-0. That marked Morrison’s third home run of the year.

The Lions added another home run via a home run from Liana Jones in the second inning to increase the lead to 3-0.

Penn State softball would once again add to their run total in the fourth inning after Maggie Finnegan reached base due to an error. Lexie Black scored on this play to make the score 4-0. A passed ball led to two more Penn State runs in the fourth inning after Maggie Finnegan and Michelle Leone crossed home plate.

The Nittany Lions added their seventh and final run in the sixth inning after Amanda Mack, who was pinch-hitting for Melody Coombs, hit a double to left field and scored Morgan Farrah.

The final score ended up being 7-0 in favor of Penn State softball. Pitcher Bailey Parshall had yet another dominant outing, this time only allowing a single hit. Pitching the whole game, she also allowed only one walk and had an impressive nine strikeouts. Parshall is definitely one of the bright spots for Penn State softball this season.

The Nittany Lions play next Tuesday against Pitt at 5:30 pm at home. They then begin conference play on Friday when they take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in a three-game series, all in Beard Field.
