Penn State football star Abdul Carter has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, reports indicated on Wednesday. The story, first reported by WJAC Channel 6 News, notes that the incident took place at a camps dominatory last month. The athletic department is aware of the situation, per the report.

Wednesday afternoon, it was reported by WJAC Channel 6 News that Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter had been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. According to the report, the incident occurred on August 8 when Penn State University police were called to Nittany Apartments for a fire alarm activation.

The police determined, and Abdul Carter later admitted, that the smoke detector was set off by the star linebacker smoking marijuana in his room. Carter surrendered a baggie of drugs to police on the scene. Court records filed on Tuesday show that Carter has been charged with one count of small amount marijuana possession for personal use. A preliminary hearing is set for October 4.

WJAC Channel 6 News contacted the Penn State athletic department, who noted that the school is aware of the charges, that they do not reflect the values of the Penn State football program, and had no further comment due to impending legal action.

Abdul Carter recorded one sack and one QBH in Penn State’s season opener against West Virginia on Saturday.

UPDATE: At practice availability on Wednesday evening, James Franklin noted that the program does not comment on issues such as this publically and that the situation is being “dealt with internally.”
