The Penn State football team was loaded with talent at the tight end position ahead of the 2023 season. Entering the Blue-White game, the Nittany Lions had Theo Johnson, Tyler Warren, Khalil Dinkins, and Jerry Cross, on their roster. Then, early signees Joey Schafler and Mega Barnwell joined the team as early enrollees. But shortly after the Blue-White game, Mega Barnwell left the Penn State football team. It was the last we heard of the former Nittany Lion, until Wednesday when he announced he would be committing to Independence Community College, formerly known as Last Chance U.
Former Penn State football TE restarts career at Last Chance U
Mega Barnwell was a three-star athlete in the 2023 recruiting class. From Fredericksburg, VA, Barnwell had versatility coming out of high school. Many recruiting experts thought he could play offensive tackle or tight end in college. Ultimately, he played tight end during his Penn State football career.
But on June 5th, 2023, Penn State removed him from the official football roster. Since then, we have not heard much from the former Nittany Lion. But now he has made his commitment to Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas.
Last Chance U?
If you know the popular Netflix series Last Chance U, Independence Community College should ring a bell. The series, which was based on former Division 1 football players getting one last chance to rejoin a Division 1 school, took place at this school from Season 3 through Season 4 until controversial head coach Jason Brown made inappropriate comments and was forced to resign.
The last two seasons of the show took place at Laney College located in Oakland, CA. Although Independence Community College is not the host of Last Chance U anymore, it’s interesting to see former Nittany Lion Mega Barnwell pick up his playing career there of all places.
