The Penn State football team earned a tough win this past weekend over West Virginia. A former defensive coordinator for James Brent Pry who is now the head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies suffered an opening weekend loss at Vanderbilt. Now, Franklin has put salt in the wound on the recruiting trail flipping 2025 recruiting class wide receiver Matthew Outten from Virginia Tech to the Nittany Lions.

Matthew Outten is from Portsmouth (Virginia) and ranks as the No. 6 player in the state and the No. 5 athlete in the 2025 recruiting class (No. 141 nationally) according to 247Sports. Over the summer he took official visits at Syracuse, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Maryland, the four-star prospect made his commitment to Virginia Tech on July 1.

However, on Monday he announced on Twitter/X that he has flipped his commitment from Virginia Tech to Penn State football.

“We home lets do it!!!” Outten tweeted Monday afternoon. The Nittany Lions now hold the No. 17 ranking in the 2025 recruiting class according to On3.

While it was eight months ago now, on Early National Signing Day in 2023, Brent Pry took a slight jab at James Franklin and the Penn State football team.

“All them over schools came calling. The Ohio Staters, the Nittany Cryin’s…”

Is it karma? Perhaps, but one thing is certain the 2025 recruiting class for Penn State football is starting to shape up to be better than expected. As the wide receiver room now holds four commitments from Lyrick Samuel, Jeff Exinor, Koby Howard, and Matthew Outten.
