On Friday night, Penn State earned two victories over Ohio State — one in hockey and one in wrestling. Both wins are massive steps in the right direction for the Nittany Lions this year.

Penn State hockey downs Ohio State, 4-3

To kick off the night, the 9th-ranked Nittany Lion hockey team (19-9-1, 9-9-1 Big Ten) defeated the 7th-ranked Buckeyes (16-10-1, 9-8-0 Big Ten), 4-3 in Columbus, Ohio. The top 10 road win is a massive success for Penn State hockey after last weekend’s crushing pair of losses in Ann Arbor.

All four of the Nittany Lions’ goals were scored by two players: Kevin Wall (1st and 4th goals) and Connor MacEachern (2nd and 3rd goals). A 3-1 PSU lead vanished in the 3rd period, though a late goal with 2:40 remaining in the game, a late goal bolstered the Nittany Lions over the 7th-ranked Buckeyes. Penn State and Ohio State will face off once more on Saturday night.

Penn State wrestling continues dominant season at Ohio State

Once again, the No. 1 Penn State wrestling team (12-0, 5-0 Big Ten) earned a massive win over No. 4 Ohio State (11-2, 5-1 Big Ten) in blowout fashion. The Nittany Lions have now won six straight against ranked teams — over the past two months, PSU has beaten No. 3 Iowa State, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 6 Michigan, No. 24 Michigan State, No. 2 Iowa, and No. 4 Ohio State.

The Nittany Lions won in dominant fashion over a top-ranked opponent yet again — when it was all said and done, PSU downed the 4th-ranked Buckeyes, 29-9, in their gym. It was an impressive win to add, though one that many saw coming seeing as the Nittany Lions are unquestionably the most dominant program in all of college wrestling.

The Nittany Lions’ next test will be on the road at No. 22 Indiana this Sunday at 2:00 PM (EST). The Lions’ two wins over Ohio State teams that are both ranked in the top 10 is a massive milestone for the 2022-23 season as a whole. The loud “WE ARE” chants that flooded Ohio State’s gym as the Nittany Lions piled onto their large victory are indicative of the current state of PSU athletics under Pat Kraft.
