STATE COLLEGE, PA — On Sunday, the Penn State Nittany Lions did what many thought could not be done this year: Penn State has finally broken its NCAA tournament drought, which dates back to 2011. In round one of this year’s March Madness bracket, Penn State basketball has earned a 10-seed and will face the 7-seed Texas A&M Aggies.
Penn State basketball falls short in Big Ten title game
This weekend has been a good one for Penn State basketball fans, though Sunday’s title game loss was hard seeing as it felt like the Nittany Lions were in it late. Still, Penn State’s incredible run to the Big Ten Championship (in year two of Micah Shrewsberry) was a sight to be seen. Additionally, it helped Penn State basketball earn six more quad one wins over the last 20 days — the Nittany Lions’ record is up to 22-13, and earned a 10-seed bid to the NCAA tournament.
Despite being down by over 15 points for most of the second half, the Penn State Nittany Lions battled back against the 1-seed Purdue Boilermakers in the Big Ten title game. Still, Purdue managed to pull away late come away with their second conference championship of the season with a two-point win over Penn State basketball.
Penn State makes NCAA tournament, gets tough draw with seeding
After Penn State’s loss to Purdue, the Nittany Lions sat down to see where they would be in this year’s NCAA tournament. If you thought the Big Ten Championship was a big game for Penn State, get ready for another sleepless night if the Lions can make some noise in the big tournament.
Penn State basketball received a 10-seed bid to the tournament, which is not too bad, though the Nittany Lions will have to face some tough competition. In the first round, Penn State is slated to face the 7-seed Texas A&M Aggies. If the Nittany Lions can win that game, they’ll advance to the Round of 32 to face the winner of Texas (2) vs. Colgate (15).
Penn State drawing the 10-seed in the Midwest region is about where most expected the Lions to be, and gives Penn State a shot at two fantastic programs (TAMU and likely Texas) on the path to a Sweet 16 berth. The path for Penn State will not be easy, though as we saw during the Big Ten tournament, it is still doable.
