We are counting down the days until the 2023 Penn State football season starts against West Virginia. A few short weeks later, the Nittany Lions will host the Iowa Hawkeyes to open their home conference schedule in what could end up being Penn State’s annual White Out game. Recently, FanDuel released their opening spread for Iowa at Penn State — one of the best games on the late-September slate.

Spread for Iowa at Penn State

According to FanDuel’s opening spread, the Penn State Nittany Lions are favored by 10.5 heading into the matchup. This game will be the first time these two teams have met since the 2021 matchup, which is well known by Penn State fans as the game that Sean Clifford and other injured Nittany Lions were mocked by Iowa fans at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.

Other game details

Iowa at Penn State is set to be played on September 23, 2023, at Beaver Stadium in State College, PA. The game will mark the beginning of Penn State’s home Big Ten schedule — it will also be the Nittany Lions’ second conference game of the season as Penn State faces Illinois on the road in Week 3 to kickoff conference play. Because of this, the Lions will host UMass in Week 7 following their bye week.

Iowa is riding a two-game win streak against Penn State heading into this game (2020-2021); however, the Nittany Lions are 5-2 against Iowa since 2011 and hold a 17-14-0 advantage in the all-time series. After facing Iowa, the Nittany Lions will hit the road again to take on the Northwestern Wildcats in Week 5 — Penn State’s game against Northwestern a season ago came down to the wire in a monsoon, though the Lions eventually won 17-7.
