DES MOINES, IA — On Saturday night, the 10-seed Penn State Nittany Lion basketball team fell just short against the 2-seed Texas Longhorns. For Penn State basketball, the 2022-23 season was monumental — the Nittany Lions finished the season with a 23-14 record (the program’s best record since 2018-19 when PSU win the NIT), made it to the Big Ten title game, made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011, and won a tournament game for the first time in over 20 years. After Penn State’s loss, second-year head coach Micah Shrewsberry had some positive words that all Penn State fans should hear.
Micah Shrewsberry has a bright future in mind for Penn State basketball
After the Penn State basketball team was knocked out of tournament contention, here is what head coach Micah Shrewsberry said about his current team and the future of Penn State hoops:
“I am happy that this group gets a chance to fire up all Penn Staters about basketball,” Micah Shrewsberry told reporters after the Nittany Lions’ Round of 32 loss. “I am happy that this group gets a chance to bring everybody together, because I have talked to players that have played for all of them, and they’re all so excited about that. Let’s keep that going — let’s be one family and rolling in one direction, and let’s keep going to tournaments ever single year.”
After a hot start, Shrewsberry’s Nittany Lions stumbled around mid-season. Still, Penn State basketball never waivered under his direction, and closed out the season with an incredible 9-3 run, which included numerous quad one wins, three Big Ten tournament wins, and one NCAA tournament win — the program’s first win in the big dance since 2001.
Heading into the 2023-24 season, Micah Shrewsberry has an uncertain future — reports confirmed that Penn State basketball is ready to do what it takes to keep him in town; however, no one knows what comes next for the Nittany Lions or Shrewsberry himself. Still, from what we can tell from Shrewsberry’s postgame words, he intends on staying in State College and building a winner for the first time in many decades.
