Earlier this week, the 2023 Penn State football schedule received another change. The Nittany Lions’ Week 13 matchup against the Michigan State Spartans is now slated to kick off in a night game on Black Friday. Additionally, that game will be played at Ford Field, the home of the Detroit Lions, instead of Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
With this new change, Penn State is already scheduled to play three night games this fall, and the schedule does not have all times set in stone just yet.
2023 Penn State football schedule contains 3 night games thus far
This year, Penn State football is breaking a streak of over two decades and will kick off the 2023 season with a night game at Beaver Stadium. In 2022, Penn State hit the road for a Week 1 night game against Purdue. The Nittany Lions escaped with a narrow victory, winning 35-31, sparking an impressive 11-2 finish with a top 10 ranking and a Rose Bowl victory.
West Virginia
Much like last year, Penn State football will kick off this season with a primetime kickoff against a Power Five program. This time, the Nittany Lions will face the West Virginia Mountaineers, renewing a rivalry matchup that has remained dormant for around three decades. Penn State’s game against WVU will be the team’s “helmet stripe” game, which acts as a mini-whiteout.
Iowa
A few weeks after the 2023 Penn State football season opener against the Mountaineers, Penn State is scheduled to host the Iowa Hawkeyes for the team’s second primetime game of the year. The Iowa Hawkeyes will fall victim to this year’s “White Out” game, the infamous and electric environment that shakes the earth with sound in central Pennsylvania.
Michigan State
Finally (so far), in Week 13, Penn State football will face the Michigan State Spartans in yet another primetime game. Right now, Penn State football is favored in all three matchups. That being said, there is a chance that the Nittany Lions are slated for a few more night games, which will likely take place sometime during the team’s road slate.
