Penn State wrestling took care of No. 17 Ohio State 28-9 on Friday night in Rec Hall. Eight Nittany Lions who didn’t get the start against the Buckeyes participated in the Edinboro Open on Saturday, three of whom are bringing titles back to Happy Valley. Which young wrestlers showed out in the latest invitational?

True freshman Barr remains unbeaten

Josh Barr took home the title at 184 pounds to remain undefeated during his redshirt year. The true freshman was wrestling unattached and went 4-0 with a pin, two tech falls, and a major. Barr is now 15-0 on the season with a 73.33% bonus percentage. The Edinboro Open is Barr’s second title in a week, as the freshman is coming off a first-place finish at Mat-Town 2 last Sunday.

Barr is surrounded by elite talent in the Penn State wrestling room, so it makes perfect sense why he was redshirted this season. After all, he has Carter Starocci at 174, Bernie Truax at 184, and Aaron Brooks at 197 in the weight classes around him. Nevertheless, Barr’s freshman campaign is looking similar to what we saw from Starocci in 2020, who went 19-0 with a 63.16% bonus percentage.

Barraclough and Cochran take first place

Terrell Barraclough went 4-0 on Saturday, picking up two pins, a tech fall, and a major on his way to the 165-pound title. The senior is now 11-2 on the year, and has been a reliable option behind starter Mitchell Mesenbrink.

Sophomore Lucas Cochran also went 4-0 to claim the 197-pound title. Cochran used two pins and two tech falls on his way to the title. Cochran is now 10-2 on the season and has a 66.67% bonus percentage. Like Josh Barr, Cochran is also fresh off a first-place finish at Mat-Town 2 last week.

Other Penn State wrestlers participating in the Edinboro Open

Freshman Connor Pierce used two pins on his way to second place at 149 pounds, finishing with a  4-1 record. True freshman Kyison Garcia finished in sixth place at 133 with a 3-2 record. Sophomore Brian Borden also went 3-2, good enough for sixth place at 174 pounds.

Penn State wrestling returns to action Friday night for the highly anticipated bout with Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
