If there’s one position that has long maligned Penn State football in the James Franklin era, it would be quarterback. While signal callers like Trace McSorley and Sean Clifford had successful careers, many felt they lacked the natural ability to take over a game completely. But Penn State QB Drew Allar has been expected to change all that from the moment he stepped on campus. The rising sophomore has been highly touted by the Penn State program and national media alike, including a recent 247Sports ranking of the top-25 QBs in college football.
Where does Penn State QB Drew Allar rank among the top-25 QBs in college football?
Recently, 247Sports put out a ranking of the top-25 QBs in college football heading into the 2023 season. Not surprisingly, the list was headlined by reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, followed by Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix, and Sam Hartman.
Penn State QB Drew Allar rounded out the list at No. 25. “Allar was the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the 2022 class and showed quite a bit of promise in his late-game action as a true freshman,” 247Sports’ Carter Bahns wrote. “If Penn State is to break through the loaded Big Ten East, it needs him to slide into the starting role seamlessly.”
Other Big Ten QBs on the list include Ohio State’s Kyle McCord (No. 22), Wisconsin’s Tanner Mordecai (No. 17), and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy (No. 9).
Will the hype translate to on-field success for Penn State football?
Whether fair or not, Allar is widely viewed as the missing piece to take Penn State football to the next level. Despite sky-high expectations, much of what we know about Allar is based on his recruiting profile and a few glimmers of late-game action last season. We have yet to see Allar stand the test of a full game, let alone an entire season. Penn State’s early season action won’t be a cake-walk either, with four Power 5 opponents in September.
While we don’t know what we don’t know about Penn State’s new QB yet, we do know that the hype around Drew Allar is very real. And, if Allar can even scratch the surface of that hype, then Penn State football could be in for a special 2023 season.
