This week, the On3 top 300 for the 2025 recruiting class underwent updates. While there were notable changes, it had minimal impact on Penn State football recruiting as they have secured only a few commitments for the 2025 class to this point. However, the latest On3 300 rankings showcased seven recruits hailing from Pennsylvania. Among them is Zahir Mathis, who holds the distinction of being the top-ranked recruit in the state.

Since assuming the role of head coach for Penn State football in the 2014 season, James Franklin has prioritized local recruiting. His well-known slogan, “the best in PA, stay in PA,” has proven to be effective, and the recent commitment from Quinton Martin, the top recruit from Pennsylvania in the 2024 class, reaffirms Franklin’s commitment to recruiting within the state.

In the latest update of the On3 300 for the 2025 recruiting class, the exceptional talent of Zahir Mathis received further recognition. Among the top 300 recruits nationwide, only seven hail from Pennsylvania, and one of them is the highly regarded four-star EDGE prospect, Zahir Mathis. Mathis’s skills have earned him a place among the top 40 recruits in the Industry Rankings.

Mathis has only been on two recruiting visits so far, both of which were with Penn State football. He is considered one of the top five EDGE prospects in the country for the 2025 class, garnering attention from every major recruiting service. As the unanimous No. 1 recruit in Pennsylvania for 2025, it is evident that Penn State football’s recruiting efforts will be focused heavily on securing his commitment.

According to the Recruiting Prediction Machine, Penn State football is the clear frontrunner to land Mathis, with a substantial 56.8% chance of securing his commitment for the 2025 class. Rutgers follows at a distant second with a mere 2.4% chance.

It is important to note that these rankings are subject to change as the class continues to be evaluated; nevertheless, Penn State football’s recruiting prospects appear to be in excellent shape for securing the highly sought-after No. 1 recruit in Pennsylvania for 2025.
