Somehow, someway the Penn State football team seems to always have serious talent at the defensive end position. From recruiting future superstars to developing players to over-achieve, the Nittany Lions have the recipe for having a stout defensive line. As we wait for the 2024 season to arrive many media outlets begin ranking position groups and On3 started with the defensive end units. Where Penn State was ranked at the bottom of the list and that did not sit well with Dani Dennis-Sutton, Abdul Carter, and their teammates.
Penn State football star DE calls out position unit ranking
This is the year that Dani Dennis-Sutton has the opportunity to be a full-time starter. With Chop Robinson and Adisa Isaac off to the NFL, Dennis-Sutton will get his chance to show NFL teams what he can do with full-game reps. In the past two seasons, he has played in a reserve role but has still created an impact on the field.
Since joining the Nittany Lions he has accounted for 43 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and 1 interception. He has appeared in every game since stepping foot on campus. Now, the junior defensive end looks to create a new dynamic duo with Abdul Carter making the shift to defensive end this offseason.
Jesse Simonton of On3 recently ranked the top defensive end units in college football. He put the Penn State football team at 10th overall to which Dennis-Sutton responded on Twitter/X. He said, “How is that even possible?”
Dennis-Sutton was not alone with his frustration
It’s not just about Dani Dennis-Sutton and Abdul Carter this fall. What makes the Nittany Lions dangerous is the depth behind those players. Smith Vilbert returns from injury in 2024. Amin Vanover received a specific shoutout from James Franklin following the Blue-White Game. Zuriah Fisher is another player who has battled adversity during his time in Happy Valley.
Then, you add a player like Jameial Lyons to the mix who looks to be the next up-and-coming edge rusher. At the end of the day, Penn State is loaded with talent at the position and they will have a chance to prove that this fall.
Smith Vilbert took to Twitter/X to join Dennis-Sutton and he kept his message simple. “Let them keep sleeping.”
