It’s been quite a month for Saquon Barkley. Three weeks after the former Penn State football star capped his historic 2024 season with a Super Bowl victory, Barkley crossed another milestone as the NFL offseason gets underway.

On Tuesday, Adam Schefter reports that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed Barkley to a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension. As a result, the former Nittany Lion is now the highest-paid running back in NFL history, and the first rusher to make over $20 million annually.

According to Schefter, Barkley, who just finished year one of his original three-year deal with the Eagles, will now make $36 million guaranteed at signing. He can then add $15 million in incentives and pay escalators.

During Super Bowl LIX, Barkley passed Terrell Davis for the most rushing yards in a single season in NFL history. Only the ninth running back in NFL history to run for over 2,000 yards in a season, he finished the year with 2,504 rushing yards, 353 receiving yards, and 20 total touchdowns. The Penn State football letterman also took home NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors.

“I expected this. This is why I came here. I wanted to be in Philly,” Barkley said of his move to Philadelphia. “This is why me and my family made the decision to come here. We felt like we could grow our family name, my legacy, and come out here and compete for championships. And here we are.”
