The big news flying around the Penn State football team this offseason was on the defensive side of the ball. Everyone was excited when Nittany Nation found out Abdul Carter would be moving from linebacker to defensive end. First, the excitement came from knowing how dominant Carter could be in this new role. But it also meant that younger linebackers have proven they could fill his shoes. Now, Tony Rojas is in the clear to become the next star linebacker at Penn State, and he recently set a new personal record in the weight room.
Penn State football rising star LB sets weight room personal record
One of the biggest challenges all incoming freshmen face is adding additional weight. It always sounds like such an easy concept, but that doesn’t mean the experience is the same for each player. Penn State football linebacker Tony Rojas has made significant process in just over a year of being at Penn State.
He was 190 pounds when he got on campus, and the latest Penn State football roster update states that Rojas is up to 232 pounds heading into spring ball. To no surprise that progress is made primarily in the weight room. Watch Rojas toss 350 pounds in a power clean below.
Other linebackers to keep an eye on
The linebacker room will start with the veterans Kobe King, Tyler Elsdon, and Dom DeLuca this season. But it’s clear that Tony Rojas is a borderline impact player entering the Spring. Another player to keep an eye on over the summer is Kaveion Keys. The redshirt freshman has had his name swirling around this offseason, and I would not be surprised if his role is expanded this season.
The linebackers that hit the field this season for Penn State will look a little different. But at the end of the day, it is their responsibility to keep the tradition and standards set at LBU.
