Surprising good news is the best news a team can get on the recruiting trail. That’s exactly what the Penn State football team received on Wednesday evening when Matt Henderson committed to the Nittany Lions. Henderson, a member of the 2025 recruiting class tight end seemed like a surprising take for Penn State as he was unranked on all major recruiting sites. But after his pledge to the Nittany Lions, he received his initial ranking from national scouts.
Recent Penn State football commit receives impressive initial rating
When Matt Henderson pledged to the Penn State football team he was technically an unranked prospect. But following his commitment, national scouts took their time to evaluate the 6-5 210-pound Powhatan, Virginia native. On3 has Henderson listed as a four-star prospect. They also list him as the No. 10 player in VA and the No. 20 tight end in the 2025 recruiting class.
According to the On3 visit tracker, Henderson has made the trip to Happy Valley the most as he chose Penn State over Michigan State and James Madison. He has visited Penn State twice and he will return on June 14 for his official visit.
One of the most important notes about Henderson is that he’s a multi-sport athlete. This typically leads to even more success on the football field when a player has trained for multiple sports. 247Sports noted that Henderson has scored more than 1,000 points in his high school basketball career. He also took off on the field last fall, accounting for 73 catches, 1,113 yards, and 14 touchdowns.
Where does the 2025 recruiting class rank?
After the addition of Henderson, the Penn State football team has a new class ranking. Currently, the Nittany Lions hold the 7th-ranked 2025 recruiting class with 13 hard commits according to 247Sports. The class now features two tight ends with the addition of Matt Henderson. He joins fellow Penn State commit and PA native Brady O’Hara in the 2025 class.
With a slew of official visits set to take place at the end of May through June, Penn State is looking to stack more talent in the 2025 cycle.
