A Penn State football letterman has got a new gig for 2024. On Sunday, former Nittany Lions standout defender Calvin Lowry was introduced as running backs coach at Middle Tennessee. Lowry spent last season in Happy Valley as an analyst. The move comes amid a flurry of staffing changes that James Franklin and Penn State have made over the previous two weeks.

Calvin Lowry added to Middle Tennessee staff

Calvin Lowry has officially been added to the Middle Tennessee staff. The announcement Sunday came after it was first reported last week that the Penn State letterman was moving on following one year at his alma mater as an offensive analyst. Lowry joins the staff of former Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason, who was announced as the Blue Raiders head coach last month.

“Calvin Lowry is a very detail-oriented coach who comes from that James Franklin tree of football,” said Mason. “He is very intelligent, a great motivator, and a relentless recruiter who understands the game inside and out. I think he makes our running back room outstanding because he understands where they have been, where they are going, and what we need to do to get from where we are to where we want to be.”

The first true freshman to start under Joe Paterno and a former All-Big Ten safety, the Penn State football standout turned to coaching after a short career in the NFL. Calvin Lowry spent time at Baylor and Tulsa before returning to State College last season as an offensive analyst.

“I would like to thank Calvin Lowry for everything he has contributed to our program in the last year,” Penn State football coach James Franklin said in response to the news. “He is a tremendous person and brought a great amount of value to our organization. Coach Mason is making a great hire in Calvin, and he will make an immediate impact on their program with his ability to develop players, recruit student-athletes, and be loyal to the staff. We wish Calvin and his family nothing but the best at Middle Tennessee.”

Multiple staffing changes underway for Penn State football

The departure of Calvin Lowry is just the latest in a series of staffing moves around the Penn State football program in recent weeks. On January 12, special teams coordinator Stacy Collins was hired away from the Nittany Lions to return to Boise State. James Franklin subsequently hired Vanderbilt assistant Justin Lustig as his replacement on January 17.

A host of off-field changes have also been made in the Lasch Building recently. While special teams analyst Eric Raisbeck is no longer with the program, Franklin has added Zach Terrill and former Central Connecticut State head coach Jeff McInerney to the staff as defensive analysts. Penn State football also hired Mark Dupuis to likely fill Lowry’s role as an offensive analyst. Dupuis spent three years as a graduate assistant with the Nittany Lions before following Ricky Rahne to Old Dominion.
