Penn State football has reached an agreement with UMass to schedule a non-conference matchup for September 16, 2028, according to a report from FBSchedules.com on Wednesday afternoon. The reported deal would finalize the Nittany Lions’ schedule for the 2028 season.

Per Kevin Kelley of FBSchedules.com, who obtained a public records request from UMass-Amherst, Penn State will pay the Minutemen $1.6 million to travel to Happy Valley. This figure is the same amount paid to UMass for last year’s contest in Beaver Stadium, which the Nittany Lions won 63-0.

The two programs had only faced once prior to last fall, in 2014, when Penn State defeated UMass 48-7.

Penn State football has not officially commented on the matchup as of Wednesday afternoon. But if UMass is ultimately added to the schedule, it would complete the 2028 slate for the Nittany Lions.

In the non-conference that year, James Franklin and the Nittany Lions open the season against Ball State on September 2 before traveling to Syracuse on September 9. Penn State will then host Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State, Oregon, and UCLA while traveling to Michigan State, Nebraska, Rutgers, and USC in Big Ten play.
