Penn State football continued to supplement its support staff with another addition on Friday. First reported by On3, James Franklin and the Nittany Lions are adding Ball State assistant Vic Hall as a defensive analyst. In addition to being a multifaceted coach at the MAC level, Hall was also a standout on the field, playing under current Penn State safeties coach Anthony Poindexter at Virginia.
Penn State football adds Division I assistant to support staff
On Friday, On3 reported that Penn State football was adding Vic Hall to its staff as a defensive analyst. Hall is the latest in a wave of support staff changes that have been made on the defensive side of the ball since new defensive coordinator Tom Allen was hired in December.
Vic Hall is coming off his third season at Ball State, where he served dual roles on both sides of the ball as defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. He also held the title of co-recruiting coordinator for two seasons. Before joining the Cardinals’ staff, Hall coached defensive backs at Hampton and Howard and was a graduate assistant for Western Illinois.
Vic Hall reunites with former coach Anthony Poindexter
Vic Hall’s varied roles at the coaching ranks stem from his all-purpose career while in college. In addition to being a standout cornerback and return man at Virginia, Hall also saw time at quarterback and receiver while in Charlottesville.
With the hiring, Vic Hall will reunite with his former coach, current Penn State football assistant Anthony Poindexter. Hall played for the Cavaliers during a decade-long stint for Poindexter on the Virginia staff.
Anthony Poindexter is an up-and-coming assistant coach in his own right. Poindexter was believed to be in the mix for lower-level head coaching jobs, as well as the Penn State defensive coordinator position, earlier this offseason.
“Well, first of all, it starts with Anthony Poindexter,” James Franklin said of the assistant coach’s presence leading up to the Peach Bowl. “Anthony has been phenomenal, has been awesome, has been extremely valuable.”
