The renewed rivalry between Penn State football and Notre Dame has extended beyond the sidelines of Hard Rock Stadium and onto the 2026 recruiting trail. Now, the battle has spilled over into the 2027 cycle, as well.
On Thursday, the Fighting Irish offered 2027 wide receiver Khalil Taylor. The Seton LaSalle (PA) pass catcher is ranked as the No. 3 receiver and No. 18 overall player in the class by On3.
Taylor officially committed to Penn State in March.
Two of the Nittany Lions’ three early commitments in the 2027 class now hold offers from the Irish. McKeesport (PA) running back Kemon Spell picked up an offer from former Penn State assistant Ja’Juan Seider this spring. Taylor, Spell, and Appoquinimink (DE) offensive lineman Layton von Brandt are all ranked inside the top 32 and are pushing for five-star status early in the cycle.
After eliminating the Nittany Lions in January’s Orange Bowl College Football Playoff Semifinal, Notre Dame has experienced a surge of success recruiting the Keystone State. The Irish have landed three of Pennsylvania’s top 10 prospects in the 2026 cycle, most recently five-star safety Joey O’Brien on Friday. O’Brien was the third coveted target to choose South Bend over Happy Valley since Wednesday.
With both programs seeing a groundswell of momentum following deep playoff runs last winter and returning top-10 caliber rosters heading into fall camp, it appears that James Franklin and Marcus Freeman will continue to face off for the foreseeable future.
