Make no bones about it, despite the sky-high expectations for former five-star quarterback Drew Allar, Penn State football is expected to be a run-heavy team in 2023. Led by Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, the Nittany Lions have one of the best running back rooms in the Big Ten, if not the entire country. Although Singleton earned much of the praise for his former five-star status and game-breaking long runs last season, Allen put together a historic true freshman season in his own right. Now going into year two, Kaytron Allen has some big plans for what he and this Penn State football team can accomplish this fall.

Kaytron Allen has some big goals for himself, Penn State football team in 2023

In 2022, Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton combined for one of the most impressive first-year campaigns in Big Ten history. With Allen’s 867 rushing yards and Singleton’s 1,061, the duo became the only true freshman teammates in conference history to each rush for at least 700 yards in a single season. Allen had 10 rushing touchdowns last fall, the second-most by a freshman in Penn State history, only behind Singleton’s 12 scores.

As a pair, Singleton and Allen already have the Nittany Lions running backs being touted as one of the best position groups in college football this season. During the 2023 Penn State football media day Sunday, I asked Kaytron Allen about his personal goals heading into the year. The sophomore running back outlined the high expectations he has for himself and the entire team this season.

“Yeah, I have a lot of personal goals,” Allen said of this season, in part. “One of them is just getting to 1,000 yards [rushing] for the year…And as a team, win the Big Ten.”

Allen has the skill set to achieve both this season. Following 2022, Allen was graded as one of the top five running backs in the Big Ten, according to Pro Football Focus. While the Nittany Lions have the potential to have a dynamic offense this year, if Penn State is to win the conference, it’ll likely be with Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton leading the way.
