The Penn State football team will continue to leverage the transfer portal after spring ball ends. There will likely be another round of players looking for a new home depending on how they finish on the depth chart. Now, Texas A&M safety and former Penn State target Jacoby Matthews from the 2022 recruiting class has reported plans to enter the transfer portal once the Spring Window opens.
Former Penn State recruiting target plans to enter transfer portal
Jacoby Matthews was a four-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class. According to On3, Matthews was the No. 1 safety in the 2022 class and ended up making his commitment to Texas A&M. During his two years with the Aggies, Matthews has collected 67 tackles, 1 INT, and 7 passes defended.
With all of the turnover at Texas A&M Hayes Fawcett of On3 has reported that Matthews will enter the transfer portal once the Spring Window opens. Matthews was heavily recruited by former Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher so the move adds up with the Mike Elko era taking over. But what’s the Penn State connection?
Matthews’ tie to Penn State
It wasn’t long ago when Jacoby Matthews was a recruiting target for Penn State football. Matthews is from Ponchatoula, LA but that didn’t stop Anthony Poindexter from going after this star.
Penn State made the official scholarship offer in January of 2021, but this was a challenging time on the recruiting trail. COVID-19 made unofficial and official visits difficult, and James Franklin has spoken about how impactful it is for recruits to be in State College. If Matthews gets a chance to visit the Nittany Lions, this could be a difference-maker added to the secondary for the 2024 season.
