Penn State football letterman Sean Clifford is seeing his time with the Green Bay Packers come to an end. First reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday afternoon, the former Nittany Lions quarterback is expected to be released by the Packers after his second preseason with the team.

The news comes less than 24 hours after Green Bay traded for Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis. Confirmed by ESPN NFL Nation Packers reporter Rob Demovsky, Rapoport’s initial reporting indicated that Green Bay will move forward with Willis as its backup to Jordan Love.

“The Packers are releasing both Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, sources confirmed,” Demovsky wrote on X Tuesday afternoon. “We’ll see if either returns in some capacity — perhaps on the practice squad — if they clear waivers. But for now, it’s Jordan Love and Malik Willis.”

The Green Bay Packers selected Sean Clifford No. 149 overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The former Nittany Lion was used sparingly last year, attempting only one pass – a 37 yard completion – across three regular and postseason games.

Clifford started the final two preseason games for the Packers against the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens. He went a combined 22-43 with 207 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in his three preseason appearances.
