The Penn State football team is looking to break the glass ceiling this fall. For the first time since the start of the College Football Playoff in 2015, the Nittany Lions are hopeful to be one of the twelve teams selected in the new format. But there’s a challenging regular season ahead of Penn State and Drew Allar will need to lead the team through that. ESPN believes that Allar is one of ten players who will determine the CFP race this fall.

Drew Allar enters his junior season and his 2nd year as a full-time starter in 2024. He has faced immense criticism after failing to deliver against Ohio State, Michigan, and Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl. However, when you look back at the season he had statistically, Allar played extremely well.

The 6-5 gunslinger from Medina (Ohio) threw for over 2600 yards last season. He also threw 25 touchdowns against 2 interceptions, proving to be great at protecting the football. Now, ESPN believes Allar is one of the top players who will determine the 2024 College Football Playoff race.

The full ESPN list included:

  1. QB Will Howard (Ohio State)
  2. QB Alex Orji (Michigan)
  3. QB Dillon Gabriel  (Oregon)
  4. QB Jalen Milroe (Alabama)
  5. QB Drew Allar (Penn State)
  6. QB Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss)
  7. QB Garrett Nussmeier (LSU)
  8. QB Cam Ward (Miami)
  9. RB Donovan Edwards (Michigan)
  10. WR Kobe Prentice (Alabama)

Allar will face a ‘criminally underrated’ opponent in week 1

While many slander Drew Allar on social media, West Virginia fans remember Allar all too well. In his first career start, he sliced up the Mountaineer defense throwing for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns.

However, West Virginia took the loss to the Penn State football team last season and went on to have a 9-4 year. The quarterback standing in Allar’s way week one is Garrett Greene. Last season, Greene finished the 2023 season accounting for 2406 passing yards and threw for 16 touchdowns against four interceptions. He also rushed for 772 yards and 13 touchdowns

Recently, Max Chadwick of PFF College provided his take on West Virginia football entering the 2024 season.

“I think West Virginia is criminally, criminally underrated right now,” PFF College shared on Twitter / X.

The Nittany Lions will kick off against the Mountaineers on August 31 as part of Big Noon Kickoff on FOX.
