As of today, we are just a few months away from the start of the Penn State football 2023 season. The Nittany Lions have completed their spring practice and the Blue/White game, and are now gearing up for a season filled with high expectations. These expectations are reflected in the post-spring top 25 rankings by CBS Sports, where the Penn State Nittany Lions are currently ranked 4th nationally and 3rd in the Big Ten conference. This places them behind only Georgia (1), Michigan (2), and Ohio State (3) in the rankings, and three spots ahead of where they were in the way-too-early rankings (7).
Penn State football 2023 post-spring ranking: No. 4
The Nittany Lions are fresh off the heels of an impressive year in 2022, winning 11 of their 13 games en route to a Rose Bowl victory over the PAC-12 Champions and the team’s fourth top 10 finish in the past six full seasons. The Penn State football 2023 schedule is not the hardest on paper; however, it is riddled with trap games, especially on the road during Big Ten play.
Despite the team’s youth, CBS Sports is still quite high on the Nittany Lions heading into the 2023 college football season, ranking them at No. 4 nationally in their recent post-spring rankings. Despite being a preseason Playoff team, Penn State football is still ranked behind two other Big Ten programs: the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes, who both finished top-4 last season after losing their College Football Playoff semi-final games.
Why is Penn State a top-4 team?
Here is what CBS had to say about their decision to rank the 2023 Penn State football team at No. 4 nationally following spring ball.
“The Rose Bowl left such a good taste in the mouths of Nittany Lions everywhere, they’re still on a sugar rush. If QB Drew Allar comes through, Penn State is a playoff team. It’s got breakaway talent at RB with Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, who combined for almost 2,000 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns, plus wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith. A split with Ohio State and Michigan looks more than possible.”
