Penn State basketball has had an up-and-down season in the first year under new head coach Mike Rhoades. With most of the current Nittany Lions roster from the transfer portal, the 2024 cycle will be the first complete high school recruiting class for Rhoades at Penn State. This week, the headliner of Rhoades 2024 class, Miles Goodman, took a massive leap into the top 100 of the national recruiting rankings.
Penn State basketball commit Miles Goodman vaults into top 100 of national rankings
Penn State basketball commit Miles Goodman was one of the biggest risers in 247Sports’ updated recruiting rankings for the 2024 cycle, vaulting into the top 100 prospects on Monday. A 6-10 four-star center, Goodman has moved up 26 spots since September and is now ranked No. 94 nationally. He is ranked as the No. 14 center in the country and the No. 12 overall player in the state of California.
Committing back in November, Miles Goodman is the second-highest-rated recruit in Penn State basketball history. He finds himself only behind only Tony Carr of the 2016 class.
Goodman is part of a three-player recruiting class for the Nittany Lions in 2024 that includes his current teammate, combo guard Dominick Stewart, as well as shooting guard Jahvin Carter out of Tennessee. Penn State now has the No. 41 ranked class of the 2024 cycle and sits No. 9 in the new 18-team Big Ten.
The future looks bright for Mike Rhoades
Head coach Mike Rhoades did a good job filling out this year’s Penn State basketball roster with transfers. There is a good balance of veteran leadership and youth on his team, which should bode well for next season and beyond.
The Nittany Lions currently have four of their top eight scorers set to return for the 2024-25 season. That includes leading scorer Kanye Clary, who is a sophomore this year and averaging 18.8 points per game. Penn State will also return Nick Kern Jr. (junior), D’Marco Dunn (junior), Zach Hicks (junior), Jameel Brown (sophomore), Demetrius Lilley (sophomore), and Favour Aire (sophomore).
That puts the roster at seven players before the three incoming recruits, Miles Goodman, Dominick Stewart, and Jahvin Carter. Rhoades will most likely add one or two players from the transfer portal to round out the roster for next season.
How competitive the Nittany Lions will be is the real question. The players returning will have another year to mold together and develop chemistry, while the incoming recruits are guys that Mike Rhoades believes fit his system. With the Big Ten moving to 18 teams, what defines a good season has changed, but finishing in that 8-12 range may be where the NCAA Tournament bubble teams fall.
