It’s funny how family ties to a university always keep an open door even after a player goes in another direction. That’s exactly where the Penn State basketball team finds themselves with Otega Oweh. Otega, the brother of former Penn State football star Odafa (Jayson) Oweh has officially entered the transfer portal deciding to leave the Oklahoma Sooners. A player that the Nittany Lions recruited to the very end in 2021 can Mike Rhoades sell the vision in Happy Valley to this rising star?
Brother of ex-Penn State 1st rounder enters the transfer portal
Otega Oweh chose a different path than his brother Odafa Oweh. Instead of the football field, Otega took his talent to the hardwood and that decision is working out well for him. The 6 foot 6 210 pound shooting guard averaged 11.4 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game in his sophomore season with the Oklahoma Sooners. Now, according to 247Sports National Basketball Analyst Travis Branham, Oweh has officially entered the transfer portal.
Penn State basketball becomes an immediate contender as it’s the school that his brother attended from 2018 – 2020. Odafa went on to become a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft of the Baltimore Ravens, where he continues to play his professional football. Will his Nittany Lion ties help Mike Rhoades land his brother in the transfer portal?
Penn State was in the hunt in 2021
While Otega Oweh ultimately went on to commit to Oklahoma, Penn State was in the hunt until the very end. At the time Micah Shrewsberry was the head coach in State College where Oweh visited multiple times. He took an official visit to Happy Valley on June 1st, 2021, and then he returned to campus again on August 30th, 2021. Two days later he made his commitment to Oklahoma.
While he initially chose to go in another direction, can the Nittany Lions convince him to return to a school that he is familiar with due to his family ties? It’s a name to keep in mind as Mike Rhoades continues to rebuild this roster ahead of next season.
