STATE COLLEGE, PA — On Wednesday, the suspense surrounding Penn State’s head basketball coach finally came to an end. According to reports, Penn State basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry is leaving Penn State University in favor of taking the head coaching job at Notre Dame.

Penn State basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry to leave for Notre Dame job

Yesterday, reports indicated that Penn State basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry was down to two schools: Notre Dame and Penn State. Both schools reportedly had their offers on the table, and the ball was placed in Shrewsberry’s court. Last night, the general feeling around the program was the Shrewsberry was good as gone; however, new developments throughout the day seemed to leave things up in the air as the time to make a decision continued to creep closer.

Today, it was announced that the former Penn State head coach will be leaving Penn State and taking the same role with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the ACC.

Shrewsberry at Penn State

In just two seasons at the helm in State College, Penn State basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry snapped the Nittany Lions’ NCAA tournament drought (2011), the program’s tournament win drought (2001), took Penn State to a Big Ten title game, pulled the program’s two best recruiting classes ever, and more.

The Nittany Lions went from being a bottom feeder in the Big Ten to a bona fide tournament team — the sky appeared to be the limit for Penn State basketball under Micah Shrewsberry’s direction until today’s announcement.

Notre Dame is closer to home for Micah Shrewsberry

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey left the program after going 11-21 this season. He is expected to become the new head coach at South Florida.

Notre Dame was absolutely an appealing job to Shrewsberry, who is an Indiana native and has spent much of his professional career coaching in the state. Shrewsberry was the head coach at Indiana University-South Bend from 2005 to 2007 before coaching at both Butler and Purdue.

Now, the search is on for the next Penn State basketball coach with Micah Shrewsberry on his way out the door.
