After completing the regular season last weekend at Purdue, Penn State softball took on the Michigan Wolverines in Wednesday’s opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Nittany Lions were down for most of the game but were able to complete a dramatic comeback capped off by a wild walk-off win.

Penn State softball wins on wild walk-off

Michigan scored the first run of the game in the second inning with a fielder’s choice. Penn State responded in the fourth inning with a solo home run off the bat of Kaitlyn Morrison.

However, Michigan answered right back with an RBI single in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead. But in back-and-forth fashion, the Nittany Lions once again tied the game back up with a sacrifice fly ball from Lexie Black that scored Lydia Coleman.

The 2-2 stalemate held until the bottom of the seventh, with the Nittany Lions looking for late-inning drama. Lilia Crouthamel worked a walk on a full count to put the winning run on base. Melody Coombs then put a bunt down the third base line. The Michigan third baseman attempted to throw Crouthamel out at second, but the ball sailed past the second baseman and to the outfield wall. Crouthamel raced around the basepath following the errant throw, giving Penn State the wild walk-off win 3-2.

The Lions are moving on

The Nittany Lions take on second-seeded Indiana on Thursday after the Hoosiers received a bye in the tournament’s first round. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
