It’s officially Penn State softball season at Basic Blues Nation!

To say the start of the season for the ladies hasn’t been remarkable would be downright false.  The Nittany Lions pulled off a 7-0 start, including an impressive no-hitter from freshman pitcher Paige Maynard.  In fact, it was her first career start as well, which makes this even more historical in its own right.

Ever since, however, the Lions have fallen to a three-game skid, losing to Georgia Tech and Boston University twice.

Lions Battle, but Fall to Boston

Penn State started off strong in this game. Junior left fielder Liana Jones hit a two-run home run in the first inning, scoring right fielder Maggie Finnegan to put the Lions up 2-0.  Third baseman Kaitlyn Morrison hit another home run, upping the score 3-0.

Boston would then tie the game up in the third inning through an RBI single and a double that scored two runs in the process.  3-3 all.

Penn State would then add yet another run via the home run – catcher Kathryn Rex hit a solo home run in the Lions half of the third inning, giving Penn State the lead once again, 4-3.

Boston would then answer by scoring on a PSU wild pitch in the fifth inning.  They also then scored on a groundout, giving them the lead, 5-4.

Penn State would also answer in the bottom of the fifth with a double from shortstop Lauren Marcotte, which scored the DP, sophomore Lydia Coleman, and tied the game at 5.

Boston would then proceed to take the lead in the sixth inning and eventually win from a two-run home run from shortstop Kayla Roncin, 7-5.
