After a magical season in Happy Valley, Arsenii Sergeev will be a one-and-done for Penn State hockey. The junior goaltender, who transferred from UConn last year, signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames on Monday. Sergeev was a seventh-round pick of the Flames in 2021. He becomes the 12th Nittany Lion in history to sign an NHL contract.
Despite only being a Nittany Lion for one season, Sergeev has a claim as the best goaltender in Penn State hockey history. He backstopped the program to its first Frozen Four, posting impressive numbers in the process. His 0.919 save percentage is the second-best in school history, while his 2.54 goals-against average was the third-best all time. Sergeev went 19-9-4 between the pipes for the Blue and White in 2024-25.
The Nittany Lions’ remarkable second-half turnaround would not have even been possible without the Russian netminder, who stole many games during the run. Perhaps his most impressive performance came in the NCAA Tournament against his former Husky teammates, stopping 42 shots to help Penn State hockey punch its ticket to the Frozen Four.
Penn State hockey lands top goaltender from transfer portal
Penn State hockey fans didn’t have to wait long to see who would fill Sergeev’s skates in 2026. Shortly after Sergeev’s NHL deal was announced, news broke that the Nittany Lions were adding Nebraska Omaha’s Kevin Reidler from the transfer portal.
The Swedish netminder is coming off a solid freshman season with the Mavericks, posting a 0.920 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average as a backup. Prior to UNO, he played for the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints for one year, posting a 27-5-2 record. Reidler is a 2022 fifth-round pick of the Ottawa Senators, bringing a high ceiling to State College.
Penn State will also add freshman goaltender Josh Fleming from the QMJHL to the roster next year. Together, the pair should be a formidable goaltending tandem for the Nittany Lions, who will enter 2025-26 with a large amount of hype.
