If Penn State football hopes to keep its season alive and advance to the College Football Playoff Semifinal, it may have to close out the Fiesta Bowl without star edge rusher Abdul Carter.

Carter entered the Nittany Lions’ injury tent midway through the second quarter amid Boise State’s eight-play, 52-yard touchdown drive. The junior defender emerged several moments later, heading straight for the exercise bike. He appeared to be favoring his left shoulder.

When the Penn State defense took the field again, Carter remained on the sideline, helmet in hand. However, when the Broncos later took the field following the two-minute warning, Carter did not have his helmet as he watched from the bench. The ESPN broadcast then showed him receiving an additional wrap on his left shoulder from the Penn State football medical team.

Abdul Carter had no recordable stats in the first half, but was part of an aggressive Nittany Lion pass rush that held the Broncos offense at bay throughout the first quarter. The Nittany Lions held Boise State to 99 pass and 48 rushing yards in the first half.

Penn State football leads Boise State 17-7 at halftime of the Fiesta Bowl.
