Penn State football is competing for the best recruiting class in the Big Ten for the 2024 cycle. While James Franklin and the Nittany Lions program have landed a handful of bonafide stars in the cycle thus far, the class has been bolstered by several underrated recruits who have ascended the ranks. One of those prospects, Penn State WR commit Peter Gonzalez, was at it again Friday night. The Pittsburgh Central Catholic WR put together an absurd stat line this weekend, going off for almost 300 receiving yards and 3 scores in the Vikings’ win.
Penn State WR commit Peter Gonzalez goes off in big win
Peter Gonzalez was part of a flurry of WR commitments Penn State football landed in June, the final of 3 wideouts to commit to the Nittany Lions in a single week. A consensus 3-star, Gonzalez does have NFL pedigree as the son of former Pitt Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers QB Pete Gonzalez.
So far through his senior season, the Penn State WR commit is showing that he may be undervalued as a 3-star. Gonzalez has flashed his big play potential on several occasions already this year. Gonzalez went viral in Penn State circles for a 54-yard bomb in Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s season opener, part of a 2 touchdown performance for the future Nittany Lion.
But, by far, Gonzalez had his best performance of the year Friday night. The Penn State WR commit put up an eye-popping 268 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in Central Catholic’s 49-6 win over Canon-McMillan. The name of the game on the night for Gonzalez was the long ball. He racked up nearly 300 yards receiving on only 7 catches, including scores of 46, 59, and 83 yards.
Penn State football is putting together a special 2024 class
Things aren’t getting any easier in the Big Ten, with recruiting powerhouses USC and Oregon set to join the conference next season. However, James Franklin and Penn State football are holding their own and then some with a remarkable 2024 class.
The Nittany Lions are currently ranked No. 2 in the conference in On3’s updated Big Ten recruiting rankings. Penn State barely trails Ohio State, the current leader, while Oregon, Michigan, and USC round out the top 5.
While several targets are still on the board, with 24 commits, Penn State’s 2024 class is mostly complete. But if we continue to see performances out of future Nittany Lions like we saw from Peter Gonzalez this week, then Penn State football is in great shape for 2024 and beyond.
