Football is fast approaching in Happy Valley. But as Penn State football is preparing to return to the practice field ahead of next month’s season opener, there’s plenty of work still to be done at the iconic home of the Nittany Lions.
This week, Penn State shared the progress of the ongoing construction at Beaver Stadium. Of course, the press box and upper portion of the stadium’s west side were demolished last winter as part of the $700 million revitalization project that will reshape the 65-year-old venue.
But with the massive renovation not set for completion until 2027, temporary measures are being put in place for the next two seasons. Construction crews are currently filling out the temporary bleachers that will house Nittany Lions fans for 2025 and 2026. They have also begun work on the booths that will serve broadcast crews beginning on August 30.
“As I enter my 12th year at Penn State, it remains a tremendous honor to lead this program and this remarkable fan base,” James Franklin said this week at Big Ten Media Days. “Beaver Stadium will look a little bit different. I think you guys know we’re in the middle of a stadium project that will not be done this year. We’ll have another year we’ll have to get through with that, but we expect Beaver Stadium to be rocking like it always is.”
The Nittany Lions will play home games in four of the first five weeks of the college football season. The year’s marquee matchup, the White Out against Oregon, looms large on the calendar at the end of September. Potentially the second top-five matchup in Happy Valley since 1999, the game will surely test the university’s ability to host a premier spectacle as construction continues.
