James Franklin and Penn State football went to SEC territory to add a new member to the program’s award-winning video staff. This week, the Nittany Lions hired away Kyle Lane from Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs to serve as the team’s next Assistant Video Director. Lane replaces Joe Loosemore, who left Happy Valley to follow Manny Diaz to Duke last week.
Penn State football picks Georgia staffer as next Assistant Video Director
Friday morning, Penn State football Director of Coaching Technology Jevin Stone introduced Georgia football Video Coordinator Kyle Lane as the Nittany Lions’ new Assistant Video Director.
“Beyond excited to welcome Kyle Lane as our new Assistant Video Director!” Stone wrote on social media. “Kyle is very well respected in the video industry and have [sic] worked with a lot of Penn Staters that speak VERY highly of him.”
Lane replaces Joe Loosemore, a five-year veteran of the Nittany Lions program. Last week, Loosemore joined the staff of former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz at Duke.
Penn State football boasts one of the premier video staffs in college sports, winning multiple national awards over the last year. Jevin Stone was recognized as the Video Coordinator of the Year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association.
Who is Kyle Lane?
Although he comes to Happy Valley by way of Georgia and has spent the last half-decade in the SEC, Kyle Lane has connections to the Keystone State and the Northeast.
A New Jersey native, Lane graduated from Temple in 2015. He got his start in the industry at Columbia as a video assistant before moving on to Kansas for the 2016 season. Lane then returned to his alma mater, where he spent two seasons as the Owls Video Coordinator.
From there, Kyle Lane jumped to the SEC, joining former Nittany Lions offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead’s staff at Mississippi State in 2019. He would remain in Starkville after Moorhead’s firing, but left to join Kirby Smart and Georgia in 2021.
The dominant power in college football today, Georgia’s championship culture permeates through the entire Bulldogs staff. This is undoubtedly a mindset that aligns with the vision James Franklin has for his own program.
“We’re not on the field,” Lane told Rich Fisher of Community News in 2021. “But my mindset is, ‘Everybody’s a key part in the program.’ Everyone has our role. We try to preach that down to our interns. We don’t want to be the blinking light on the Christmas tree, so it’s a team thing. Everyone is just really expected to do their job and do it well, so that’s what we try to do.”
