Through one month of play, recent Penn State football commit Kemon Spell has shown that he’s more than worthy of his top-ten ranking and status as the No. 1 running back in the 2027 recruiting cycle. The dynamic sophomore proved as much again on Friday evening, leading McKeesport to its first win of the season, a 28-7 victory over Belle Vernon.

Up 7-0 in the waning minutes of the first half, Spell extended the McKeesport lead to 14 with a 17-yard score. The 2027 recruit put the game out of reach with a 71-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. His final touchdown of the night, this time from 20 yards out, put McKeesport up 28-0.

On just 15 carries, Kemon Spell ran for 150 of McKeesport’s 314 rushing yards. Friday wasn’t the first time the sophomore has taken over a game this year; he had a similar three-touchdown performance in the season opener last month.

Kemon Spell became the Nittany Lions’ first commitment in the 2027 recruiting cycle when he made his pledge to James Franklin and Penn State football in early August. Three weeks later, Spell was named the top running back and the No. 7 prospect in the country in On3’s initial 2027 recruiting rankings.

“It’s a lot. Being number one, it’s very special to me,” said Spell recently. “I imagined all this growing up. That’s what I wanted to do. And Penn State: love the coaches; that’s where I wanted to be. Love them all up there. Love Coach Franklin. It’s just where I wanted to be at the moment.”
