Is Trace McSorley planning a return to the Penn State football program? We now know that Pat Kraft is in favor of the iconic Nittany Lions quarterback returning to Happy Valley.

Speaking at THON’s annual pep rally on Saturday evening, the Penn State athletic director floated the idea of McSorley, who served as the event’s emcee, joining the Nittany Lions staff.

“Nobody knows it, but I’m dropping it right now,” Kraft said. Whether the comment was pure jest or if there was weight to the offer, only time will tell.

At any rate, Penn State football does have several openings on its staff. The school currently has a job posting listed for an analytics coordinator. The Nittany Lions have lost analysts Robb Smith and Vic Hall to Rutgers in the last month. There is also an opening for an assistant recruiting coordinator for personnel and recruitment after Khalil Ahmad recently left to become the associate general manager at Temple.

“Khalil did a really good job for us as well, so we wish him well, but that creates a ton of work as well,” James Franklin said earlier in February. “The interview process, being as thorough as we possibly can with that, while also understanding in today’s college football, the timing of it is really important as well.

“There’s a lot of uneasiness and uncertainty from our current roster, as well as recruits. So we want to be sensitive to that as well. But not to the point where we don’t do a great job, and we’re not thorough with our process.”

Trace McSorley has suited up for six NFL teams in as many years. Most recently, he was signed and released by the Washington Commanders last August. His most recent game action came with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022.
