James Franklin appears to be doing some internal repositioning in order to keep one of his former lettermen on the Penn State football staff for the 2025 season.
Blue White Illustrated’s Greg Pickel reports that former Nittany Lions defensive lineman and graduate assistant Torrence Brown will assume an analyst role for this season. As of Saturday morning, the Penn State athletics official page still reflected Brown’s previous title.
NCAA guidelines allow individuals to serve as graduate assistants for a total of three seasons. Brown was a graduate assistant for the Nittany Lions the last two years after spending his first season with former Penn State assistant Charles Huff at Marshall. He got his start in coaching at Division III Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2020, followed by Division II Eastern New Mexico in 2021.
Brown recorded 52 tackles, two sacks, and one defensive score over three seasons with Penn State football before he was forced to medically retire. He worked with the Nittany Lions as an undergraduate assistant for one season before resuming his playing career at Southern Miss.
Entering the 2024 season, 16 lettermen were either members of the Penn State football or athletic department staff. Since then, James Franklin has added to that number, hiring Greg Gattuso and Trace McSorley this offseason.
