How fitting is it that a running back that was added in the transfer portal might have a major role this season? That’s where Trey Potts finds himself with this Nittany Lion football team. The Penn State football running back filled in for Kaytron Allen after he left the Northwestern game with an injury. Potts took advantage of his opportunities scoring his first two touchdowns in a Penn State uniform on Saturday. Following the game, head coach James Franklin had great things to say about Potts.

Trey Potts found himself in a heavier load on Saturday after an injury provided an opportunity. He took advantage of that opportunity. He finished the game with 3 carries for 21 yards and a rushing touchdown. Potts also caught a pass from Beau Pribula that led him into the endzone on a 30-yard score. After the 41-13 win over Northwestern, James Franklin spoke highly of Potts.

Franklin said, “I think Trey Potts is a great example. Transfers in here as a senior didn’t get a whole lot of reps and a whole lot of burn the first couple of games. And just kept a great attitude and kept working. When he got opportunities he maximized them. So, it’s great to see him be able to come in and know that we feel like we have three backs that we can win with, in this league.”

Obviously, the sample size is small but Potts does lead the running back room averaging 5.5 yards per carry. This season he has racked up 19 carries for 105 yards and 1 touchdown. He brings an element of explosiveness that the run game has not had in 2023. I would love to see him get a heavy workload against UMass to see what he can do with more game reps in this offense.
