Five-star QB committed elsewhere, PA’s No. 1 recruit to visit Penn State for Ohio State game

James Franklin and Penn State football will once again have a chance to make their pitch to one of the top QBs in the 2025 cycle this weekend when he travels to Happy Valley.

This weekend is expected to be one of the most significant recruiting events for James Franklin and Penn State football this fall. The Nittany Lions have multiple top prospects and potential flip candidates slated to attend Saturday’s showdown with No. 4 Ohio State. On Thursday, the Blue and White added another notable name committed elsewhere: in-state 2025 five-star quarterback Matt Zollers.

The Spring-Ford quarterback and current Missouri commit confirmed to On3 and other recruiting outlets Thursday afternoon that he plans to attend the top-five matchup between the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes.

However, at least outwardly, there’s little indication that Zollers currently intends to flip from the Tigers.

“I’m still locked in with Mizzou,” Zollers told Steve Wiltfong. “I just think it’d be a cool game to go check out.”

Zollers is the top recruit out of the Keystone State, the cycle’s No. 3 quarterback, and the No. 18 prospect overall, according to On3’s 2025 class rankings. He committed to Missouri in April after a lengthy recruitment by Penn State football.

In September, Zollers was sidelined for the rest of his senior season with what was described as a “gruesome lower leg injury.”

The Nittany Lions already hold a commitment from three-star quarterback Bekkem Kritza in the 2025 cycle. Kritza, who recently transferred from Miami Central (Florida) to Chaminade-Madonna Prep midseason, is also expected to be in attendance on Saturday.

Penn State football is also reported to be among the top teams already linked to four-star Bishop Verot (Florida) quarterback Carter Smith following his decommitment from Michigan on Wednesday night.

According to On3, the Nittany Lions have the No. 16 class nationally in the 2025 recruiting cycle.
