After an entire generation of young college football fans missed out on the opportunity to lead their team to a title on the virtual gridiron, EA Sports is set to relaunch the popular video game franchise this coming summer. Whereas the last installment of the game a decade ago could only make veiled references to the superstars of the sport, the birth of NIL in college athletics allows College Football 25 to now go all in on recreating the likeness of today’s players. Those kicking off with Penn State football this summer can expect to play with some of the program’s biggest stars, as this week, Drew Allar and Nicholas Singleton became the first Nittany Lions to announce that they are officially “in the game.”
EA Sports set to relaunch video game franchise after decade absence with College Football 25
It has been over 10 years since the last NCAA Football video game came out. NCAA Football 14 was released on July 9, 2013. Featuring Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson on the cover, the game is now famous, but for mostly the wrong reasons.
At the time, few knew this would be the last installment of the franchise for over a decade. The development of college football fans’ favorite video game stopped following disputes regarding the lack of reimbursement for college athletes for using their likenesses in the game. As a result, an entire generation of young college football fans have grown up without one of the most popular games on the market.
However, the introduction of NIL into college athletics has given new life to the popular video game franchise. Three years after college athletes became able to profit off their name, image, and likeness, EA Sports announced that College Football 25 would be hitting the shelves in 2024.
Drew Allar, Nicholas Singleton become first Penn State football players to opt into NIL opportunity with popular video game
As a summer launch date rapidly approaches, anxious fanbases across the country learned more details about College Football 25 this week. On Thursday, EA Sports announced that all 134 FBS programs will be featured in the game. Penn State football promptly let Nittany Lions fans know that they will indeed be seeing a virtual rendition of the Blue and White this summer.
Furthermore, EA Sports also opened an application for current college football players to opt into the video game this week. Athletes choosing to participate will receive NIL reimbursement — $600 and a copy of the game. EA Sports will also have brand ambassadors, who will conceivably have more NIL opportunities with the video game.
As of this weekend, we know that at least a pair of Penn State football superstars will be featured in College Football 25. On Thursday, star running back Nicholas Singleton became the first Penn State football player to announce that he is officially “in the game.”
Shortly thereafter, quarterback Drew Allar also made his involvement official with a similar post on social media. Saturday, Singleton and Allar with followed by another offensive weapon, WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
Those looking to see the virtual versions of No. 10 and No. 15 in the Blue and White won’t have to wait much longer, with the release of College Football 25 expected for early this summer.
