Defensive back is a position group that will look very different in 2024 for the Penn State football team. Nittany Lion fans are used to hearing names like King, Hardy, and Dixon when big plays are made in the secondary. But in 2024 there’s a good chance all three of those players are gone. Kalen King and Johnny Dixon have not made official announcements at this time. However, Terry Smith has alluded that all three players will enter the 2024 NFL Draft. That leaves a lot of young players in a tough spot with not much depth behind them unless the Nittany Lions can land Georgia CB Daniel Harris who is in the transfer portal.
Can Penn State football reunite with this Georgia CB in the portal?
It’s not every day that you get a second chance at recruiting a player. But in today’s era of the transfer portal, second chances are possible. For the Penn State football team, James Franklin and Terry Smith have an opportunity to reconnect with Daniel Harris who they were close to landing out of high school. Harris entered the transfer portal on Christmas Day.
From Miami, Florida Daniel Harris was a four-star cornerback prospect in the 2023 recruiting class coming out of high school. Georgia was the favorite and they earned a commitment from Harris on July 1st, 2022. But then in November of 2022, momentum swung back to the Nittany Lions. Harris de-committed from Georgia and received a crystal ball to Penn State.
Unfortunately for Penn State, nothing came from all of this. A few weeks later additional crystal balls were placed for Harris to commit to Georgia and the rest is history. He appeared in 5 games this season for the Bulldogs so Harris will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Who to look out for in the secondary for Penn State in 2024?
If Kalen King, Johnny Dixon, and Daequan Hardy leave for the NFL the Nittany Lions will need a few players to step up. Starting with Cam Miller who will likely be the No. 1 cornerback for Penn State next season. Miller played a lot in 2023 and should be prepared for the challenge ahead.
Also, keep an eye on Elliot Washington and Zion Tracy who both flashed during their freshmen campaigns with Penn State in 2023. Both players might end up starting and should have significant roles in the Peach Bowl this Saturday.
