Drew Allar: Three Penn State football wide receivers are ‘changing the culture’

The culture in the Penn State football wide receiver room is changing due to three veteran leaders, according to Drew Allar.

For the Penn State football team to take that next step this fall, the wide receivers must be better. But that’s not just on game day. It’s about establishing a consistent standard for each player to maintain from now until the end of the 2024 season. It sounds like the Nittany Lions have taken that next step according to QB Drew Allar. He has recently discussed how Trey Wallace, Liam Clifford, and Julian Fleming have taken it upon themselves to change the culture.

Last season the Penn State football team lacked a reliable No. 1 target. By the end of the 2023 season, it was unclear who Drew Allar would be able to rely on. But with Dante Cephas, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and Malik McClain entering the transfer portal, Penn State has been able to reset from a leadership standpoint.

A lot of that responsibility falls on the shoulders of Ohio State transfer Julian Fleming, who knows what it takes to have one of the top receiver rooms in the country. But recently, Nate Bauer of Blue White Illustrated spoke with the junior quarterback, who has called out multiple players who have emerged as leaders.

“They’re ten times ahead even from where we were in the spring, ” Allar said. “And I think it’s really been three leaders in that room; Trey [Wallace], Liam [Clifford], and [Julian] Fleming. I think they’ve taken it upon themselves to change that culture.”

This is the second instance where Drew Allar has called out Liam Clifford this offseason. Perhaps this is the year that Clifford can solidify himself as a staple in the offense. In an interview with State Media in April, Allar called Clifford “Mr. Dependable.”

“I think the receivers have taken a huge step forward this year specifically Trey [Wallace] and Liam [Clifford]. Liam is Mr. Dependable out there. He’s a super smart receiver…”

While the wide receivers still need to create separation and have reliable hands on the field. A positive change for the Nittany Lions is the leadership that has Allar singing the praises of his top targets for the 2024 season.
