Penn State football QB commit: Drew Allar is ‘such a role model for me’

From one generation of Penn State football quarterbacks to another, Nittany Lions 2026 commit Troy Huhn is taking his lead from Drew Allar.

Drew Allar is midway through his third, and potentially final, year with the Penn State football program. Even if the junior quarterback decides to take his talents to the NFL after this fall, Allar has left a mark in Happy Valley that will remain long after his days with the Nittany Lions are finished. It’s even possible that we see a little bit of the Medina, Ohio, gunslinger in a soon-to-be Penn State quarterback, 2026 commit Troy Huhn.

The Mission Hills (California) quarterback was on hand for the Nittany Lions’ 33-30 overtime victory against USC in Los Angeles last weekend. After the game, Troy Huhn spoke of the experience and his relationship with Drew Allar.

“It was a super exciting win,” Huhn told Blue White Illustrated. “[I had] So much fun watching that offense. Lots of ups and downs. But they [Penn State] did whatever it takes and came out with a great win.

“Drew had a solid game. Besides those little mistakes, he led the team to the win, and that’s the most important thing. He is such a role model for me, and I can really see myself being just like him.”

Troy Huhn hasn’t ascended to the recruiting pedigree that Drew Allar achieved before arriving in State College, but he’s still one of the most talented quarterbacks in the nation for his class. Currently a four-star, Huhn is the No. 6 quarterback and No. 58 prospect overall in On3’s 2026 recruiting rankings.

Huhn is part of a budding group of early commitments for James Franklin and the Nittany Lions in the 2026 recruiting cycle. The second-highest rated of six pledges, Huhn has helped Penn State football quickly rise to the top of the national 2026 recruiting rankings, coming in at No. 3.

Can Drew Allar make himself a sure-fire first-round pick over Penn State football’s final six games?

The NFL Draft expectations have surrounded Drew Allar since before he ever stepped foot on Penn State’s campus as a true freshman. While publicly still undecided about his future after 2024, the second half of the Nittany Lions’ season could ultimately decide how high Allar can rise in this spring’s draft order.

Allar has reaped the benefits of Andy Kotelnicki’s new offense through one half of the season, closing in on 1,500 yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions through six games. He’s averaging nearly 15 yards per completion, up from 11 a season ago, but has also improved his passing efficiency, ranking seventh nationally this year as opposed to 58th in 2023.

However, Allar was not projected to go in the first round in the midseason mock draft released by ESPN’s Jordan Reid on Wednesday. Reid has three quarterbacks – Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward, and Georgia’s Carson Beck – being selected in round one.

But undefeated and ranked third in the nation, the bright lights will be firmly fixed on Drew Allar and the Nittany Lions throughout October and November.

Penn State football returns to action next week with a primetime matchup at Wisconsin, followed by a potential top-five contest with Ohio State and then the (official) White Out against Washington. Depending on how they fare over the next three weeks, possible Big Ten title or College Football Playoff dates await.

Since Allar made his pledge to the Nittany Lions in 2021, Penn State has been waiting for this six-week defining stretch. And now that it’s here, Allar has the chance to prove that it was worth the wait.
