STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — This afternoon, Mike Rhoades and the Nittany Lions’ basketball program received some good news. Kanye Clary — a rising star with Penn State basketball — will be staying put in Happy Valley, giving the Nittany Lions one less thing to worry about as they hit the portal and look to assemble a brand new roster before next season.

Penn State basketball retains Kanye Clary ahead of 2023-24 season

Earlier today, Penn State rising star Kanye Clary announced that, despite the departure of former head coach Micah Shrewsberry, he has elected to stick around in State College for the coming season. Clary’s style of play fits in Mike Rhoades’ scheme quite well, so this news is another excellent piece of the puzzle for Penn State basketball as the Nittany Lions head into a season full of unknowns.

Being a freshman a season ago, Kany Clary did not get a notable amount of time on the floor; however, when he was on the floor, Clary stood out and showed his star potential. As a recruit, Kanye Clary was rated as a three or four-star recruit (depending on the service you use) and was ranked as a top 10 player in Virginia by 247 Sports, On3, and ESPN.

Clary had a breakout performance last February against the Maryland Terrapins, scoring on eight of his 11 shots and totaling 17 points all said and done. While he didn’t always get much time to prove himself, Clary still shot 43% from the field and 70% from the free throw line as a true freshman, and will only continue to get better with time. The Nittany Lions still have some work to do with the roster — there are still many scholarship spots open at this time — but retaining Clary is a huge move for Mike Rhoades and another step in the right direction for Penn State basketball.
