State College — It’s been a hard few weeks for the Penn State Nittany Lions baseball team. The Lions had gone 2-6 since March 24. Most recently, Penn State baseball lost to Bucknell on Tuesday, extending its losing streak to three games. However, Rob Cooper’s squad got back in the win column on Thursday, beating Delaware State 7-2.

Late surge pushes Penn State baseball past Delaware State

The Hornets struck first with a two-run first inning off a fielding error and an RBI single. The Nittany Lions would not have an answer until the fourth inning when a wild pitch helped Jay Harry score to put Penn State baseball on the board. The game remained quiet until the sixth inning when the Lions’ Grant Norris brought home a run via a groundout to tie the game.

The Nittany Lion bats then exploded in the seventh inning. The Lions took the lead following groundouts from Jay Harry and Josh Spiegel with runners on base. Then, Norris hit a two-out triple to give Penn State a 5-2 lead. Bobby Marsh would cap off a four-run inning with an RBI single.

Thomas Bramley added one more run for the Nittany Lions in the eighth inning off an RBI single. Delaware State could not answer, and Penn State baseball got the 7-2 win. Pitchers Jaden Henline and Steven Miller excelled in this game. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Henline pitched five scoreless innings, racking up five strikeouts. Miller relieved Henline in the seventh inning and pitched three scoreless innings himself. Miller struck out six while only allowing a single hit and ultimately secured the win for Penn State.

Keep the ball rolling

With the win, Penn State baseball is now 15-11 on the season. The Lions face Delaware State again on Friday. The game can be streamed on B1G+ starting at 6 p.m.
