Penn State wrestling officially clinched its third straight National Championship during the semifinals of the NCAA Championships on Friday night. The culmination of what has been one of the most dominant teams in program history, the Nittany Lions are in the midst of one of the best tournaments of the Cael Sanderson era. With the team title now locked up before the end of day two, Penn State will look to cap off the weekend by claiming multiple individual titles on Saturday.
Penn State wrestling wins 12th National Championship in program history
The Penn State wrestling dynasty keeps on rolling in 2024, with the Nittany Lions clinching their 12th team title before the final day of the NCAA Championships. The Nittany Lions are third all-time in National Championships, with only Oklahoma State (34) and Iowa (24) having more.
The feat Friday night seals a third consecutive title for the Nittany Lions, and the 11th title in the past 13 seasons. Cael Sanderson has turned the Penn State wrestling program into an absolute juggernaut, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon with young talent all throughout the starting lineup. Penn State came into the NCAA Championships with a chance to break multiple records, several of which will still be in play on Saturday.
Cael Sanderson inches closer to wrestling immortality
Cael Sanderson has made Penn State wrestling one of, if not the most, dominant dynasty in all of college sports. The Nittany Lions head coach now has 11 National Championships, which moves him into a tie with former Oklahoma State coach E.C. Gallagher for the second most titles in NCAA wrestling history.
“My fondest memories are just the people,” Sanderson said earlier this season when asked to reflect on his time at Penn State. “The coaches, the alumni, the kids on the team. And just those relationships. They’re by far what I’m most grateful for.”
Sanderson is now chasing legendary Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable and his 15 National Championships.
Penn State wrestling will participate in the medal round on Saturday at 11:00 am on ESPNU/ESPN+ and the NCAA Championship finals at 7:00 pm on ESPN/ESPN+.
